Fandom-specific

[DCU] [info]shadowvalkyrie: DCU musings: "Specifically, porn. [...] Even more specifically, kinky porn. And the discrepancy of why the Bruce/Tim variety tends to be a great deal more popular than the Bruce/Jason one."

[Torchwood, Buffy the Vampire Slayer] [info]firefly124: Okay, so everybody else has probably already read this AfterElton article (the article compared Torchwood and BtVS in regards to character death, and the post builds on that. I'm not being more specific because I'm unsure whether details about Torchwood's third season are still considered spoilers.)

General

[info]thete1: "I know it's racist, Te, but the special effects look awesome!": "This has been on my mind -- harshing *my* squee -- since that first Transformers movie came out and so many of you were full of excuses about why you were going to see it anyway. Despite the racism."

In a post titled Saying Goodbye, [info]yourlibrarian talks about important changes in TV, reality shows, the demise of the WB, and that the cause for the popularity decline in music games could be "a stranglehold on copyright".

[info]cluegirl: Thoughts Contingent on Reader Entitlement; the fandom edition: "So what is it that makes us as readers so much more ready to be spiteful about work we DID NOT have to pay for? Other than the fact that we can, and the writer in question is unlikely to have highly paid lawyers who might give us a telling-off for acting like arseholes, I mean?"

[info]skuf: Where's all the meta?: "Remember back in the day - e.g. 2006 - when [metafandom] issues were posted about every other day and had shitloads of links? What happened? Brainstorming: ..." (Cross-posted to DW, where the big discussion obviously seems to happen, but I decided to link the IJ version on principle.)

[info]xie_xie_xie: metafandom and its discontents: "But the last three or four times I submitted a link, either mine or someone else's, either QAF-specific or "big picture" fandom meta, it was just ignored. I never knew if they just didn't like it, or didn't get it, or what the problem was."

Normally, I wouldn't post onto something like this, but I would really like to see this become a success, so here goes.

I saw advertisements for this movie, Daybreakers, with virtually the same premise as this game I made sometime in '08. It's a world where vampires are the majority, and humans are the very small minority. Humans are farmed like cattle for their blood, kept alive, and people can basically buy blood to eat, however expensive it may be. There are, however, a few groups of humans left in the wild (namely South America, and upwards into the tundra regions) -- thus the birth of Operation Extract, a group who takes on missions to achieve whatever quantity of humans they can, to continue the blood flow for the vampires at home.

There was also some HP undertones mixed in as well. There was a "blood hierarchy" if you will, betweens lineage vampires (those born from vampires) and tainted/sired vampires. Lineage vampires make up the minority, but are ALL in places of power, and given special privileges (such as owning humans as slaves), and birthing children. Essentially, all vampires can birth children, but it depends on the quantity of blood they receive that keeps the body functioning relatively normal, thus paving the way to conceive children. Vampires haven't been able to do that since they've taken over, so all lineaged vampires are relatively older in recorded years, but not necessarily appearance. I originally wanted to just play out this rebellious nature of sired vampires vs. lineaged, and perhaps include those involved within the operation on the side, and focus on the next step in the predatory chain -- some sort of hybridized form of the two, but I wouldn't mind changing the focus around, should there be enough interest in someone who likes vampires, etc.

Initially we had strong interest in the game, but a few anonymous comments sort of started up some drama (over the lineage vampires last names, and ethnic-specific origins, of all things) sort of popped my desire to continue it further, as I'm particularly drama free, and I didn't expect aspects like using a feminine/masculine form in a last name was such an issue, as both were registered within the US consensus bureau, but anyways!

I think it would be a lot more fun to keep the lineaged/sired issues as sort of the background meat and potatoes, and sort of grow on the concept of Operation Extract, and perhaps actually make a squad/group that works for scouting humans, and maybe does more.. guard/foreign affairs...?

I don't know, but feedback, and a co-mod would be pretty peachy keen.

I've done it.

I have twitter.

I've also discovered I am impervious to hang-overs. 2 margaritas, 4 shots of tequila, one glass of wine, one vodka and lemonade. I'm pretty sure that should have given me a headache.

I have the following idea for a game mixing clones, time travel and apocalyptic urgency.

A group of men and women is sent back in time to the present to stop the series of events which will lead to humanity's downfall. They are highly trained, hand-picked soldiers and they are devoted to their cause. But they are not alone.

Twenty years from now, efforts to eradicate disease and assuage pain will have created a heavy demand for medical progress. Human cloning, a morally contested pipe dream at the end of the twentieth century has become norm. But the tyranny of the natural born and the marketing of organs, children and self-replicas has been destroyed by the product it made popular.

Human clones - conventionally called tanks for their ex-utero gestation - have both perfected and taken over the technology used to create them. They have taken up arms against their 'parents' and now seek revenge.

Essentially, the rpg would be a mixture of The Island, Battlestar Galactica, Flashforward and Terminator without really touching upon the canon of either. Every 'future' character would enter the game with a mission, a sort of prime directive he or she must follow, while, at the same time, responding to events and forming relationships with characters they encounter. Clones would make challenging PBs useless and multiple characters could share the same face. Contemporary characters would also be allowed.

What I'm looking for - besides oodles of feedback - would be a mod or two to help me set this baby up.

Where do mods find their fancy images?

I know of places like DeviantArt and GettyImages, but ads never seem to give credit to websites like that. Is there some free-for-all source that I'm unaware of? I can't imagine that mods take the pictures themselves. (Well, maybe some of them. But what about the pretty ones?)

Just look at the ads on [info]find_a_game if you don't know what I'm talking about.

Edit: Also-- I'm starting a new game on this journal, and I could definitely use some help modding. The game, [info]interns, is a HP MWPP game set in 1977, beginning right after the Marauders & co receive their NEWT scores. It's just AU enough to allow for its premise-- graduates are typically employed in an internship for one year following graduation. What follows is fun drama related to characters being on their own for the first time, along with some nice intrigue spawning from Voldemort's plan to infiltrate various organizations through his followers that have become interns.

Now that the winter blues are slowly but surely dwindling down, here's trying again for a co-moderator for Supernatural-verse alternate historical fantasy set in 15th century England! There is now an actual premise and a character list in the journal. The F.A.Q., rules and applications still need drafting, but I'm hoping this would be enough to generate some fellow modly interests.

Some non-modly matters that need to be addressed:
Where would you, as a player, like to see the focus on?
→ Lancastrians vs. Yorkists (the War of the Roses, general court intrigue)
→ Supernatural: Epic Scale (hunters + angels vs. demons)
→ Supernatural: the People (independent hunters + hunters in the Brotherhood or the Order just fighting the good fight)
→ Other

In terms of historical accuracy...
→ Alternate history from 1460 onwards
→ Time manipulation (i.e. angels went back in time, sort of like how they sent Dean forward in S5E04 The End)
→ Loosely base on history, with room for creative interpretation
→ Be a stickler for historical accuracy

Type of game?
→ PB
→ Group PSL

Are you happy with the year 1460 as our starting point?
→ Yes, keep it that way
→ No, I have a better idea and will specify in the comments

How about the premise? (Please note that explanations for some obvious questions are being answered in the upcoming F.A.Q.)
→ Makes sense :D
→ It's madly insane in all the wrong way!
Thanks for your interests and Happy Holidays everyone!

This is not drawing. This is also not laundry. Today was decompression time though, so laundry has been pushed to tomorrow. In the process of compiling this I realised the creative niche that vidding fills for me, which is being able to sort all my squeeful thoughts and say here are all the things I love about ____. With music attached. I always feel slightly weird about vidding since I don't approach it with any intention to learn the finer details of editing or crafting a strong visual narrative, but coming to understand why I vid makes me feel more comfortable sharing what I've made.

I also feel like all the classic and contemporary big band/crooners I've been listening to while working in the lab this semester was just preparing me to fall in love with this show. Also, OT3 much? Purr.

Eastwick

Add to Memories Tell a Friend
Hello! My name is Taylor and for a while now I've been thinking about how much fun it would be to play in a game based off of the television series Eastwick. I've never modded a game, and wasn't really looking to. I searched around in hopes of finding an active Eastwick game already in play but had no such luck. So now I've come to pitch the idea and see if anyone would be interested in picking it up and modding the game! I'd be willing to co-mod if its necessary. I'm not too good with HTML and since it'd be my first, I fear I would only make things harder. But I'm very much looking forward to playing in this game if anyone is interested in the idea!

Add to Memories Tell a Friend
I'm sort of x-posting here. Already posted in [info]pbads but we all know how fast that scrolls, so I'm taking a stab here.

I want to take up modding again, but I need some moral support and advice. Basically, this character was in a comm with wonderful potential and a unique premise, called [info]projectcherub, but the mods disappeared before the game even got started. I love the idea of this character, the game, and all the other characters that were in the comm.

So I'd like to reboot this game.

I commented/messaged everyone who was in the old game, hoping to ping their email inboxes.

I want this to be about international conspiracy, involving covert ops, elite military groups (so that I can work the plot arc around the existing child soldier characters), espionage, etc. My vague idea so far is based on the current Middle Eastern conflicts, without going into too much real detail. The premise is political conspiracy around the world. Players will be members of a secret society propagating war and keeping the war going. Potential character groups would be politicians & public officials, law enforcement & military, military agents, investors & front organizations, and journalists & media CEOs. This would allow players to choose any country to reside in, with a few limitations based on population and involvement.

I'm afraid people will be turned off because it looks complicated. I don't think it is, but I need outside eyes!

Cheerio!

Ok, dears, off to catch my plane home on the most wintery afternoon yet (hope I'll make it out of London before the snow warning hits...).

[personal profile] liriaen, against all odds, I got your postcard from London today. Thanks *so* much!

And yes, intermittent net access over the coming weeks, unless one of my parents' neighbours has decided to run an unlocked wifi :).

Guess who is done with finals, omfg.

Tomorrow I am going to celebrate by doing laundry. Which doesn't seem exciting, but I am down to the Clothes I Never Wear. Which is also a good indication of what needs to go in the donate pile.

ALSO I AM GOING TO DRAW. My god, am I going to draw. Later when I am a little less DONESQUEE, I will post some shots of my projects. I am pretty damn happy with them.

Born November 19th 1921
Died March 1944 during The Great Escape

Roz's mother told her over the phone tonight that they have his personal effects in her grandmother's loft, on the Isle of Wright. That's a long way away from Germany, from Australia, a million miles from the Second World War. How her family came into possession of them, we don't know, but we're going to return them.

It's a very strange thing to think about. Especially at Christmas, when the Great Escape is traditionally aired. Where his family are, I don't know. How long it will take to find them and give them these things, I don't know.

It's a rather sombre night tonight.

Photoshop question?

Add to Memories Tell a Friend
Okay. So I've been using GIMP for about two years now and generally as long as I have high quality photos to work with and with a lot of practice I'm fairly satisfied with the outcome of most everything I make. I never try to make anything terribly fancy with it but I feel like if I had the tools I could do a lot more graphic wise.

So I looked into getting Photoshop a while back and I just checked again tonight and it says that CS4 is $700 unless you're upgrading, where it's $200.

So, my question is, for all those using Photoshop did you really pay $700 for it? If not, how did you get your hands on it?

I guess this could go for PSP too, althought that's only listed as $60 on their wesbite, would users of that program recommend it as comparable to Photoshop?

Last night I picked up pasta for dinner from the cafe around the corner, and instead of working on our finals, J and I watched 5 episodes of White Collar.

In our defense, we were both too exhausted from work to do anything productive.

Also in our defense, we are addicted.

We will be saving the last ep for /after/ finals. I... I'm probably going to need icons. :x

I'm in the process of developing a new game I plan to call Phenomena. The plot is based around a governmental developed drug that was suppose to allow people to access a large percentage of their brain. For a while the drug seemed successful and was administered to thousands of people, however after a while people started having blackouts and reported hallucinations of a strange dream world they all called Morpheus. The testing was shut down, however many were addicted to it, and to the world of Morpheus. Now people addicted to the drug are called Dreamers and live double lives in the real world and Morpheus, and illegal dealers of the drug are known as Sandmen. The government also issued agents, known as Nightmares, who enter Morpheus to catch Dreamers.

The game will have multiple settings, one of which is the Dream World of Morpheus itself. It's also going to be a dual-pb game, which means that dreamer and nightmare characters can have two pbs, one which is their real world appearance and another which is their appearance in the dream world.

I'd absolutely love to get someone to help me with development and moderation. Or/And absolutely any feedback, suggestions, etc!

I'm ridiculously behind on my lighting final. I'd been struggling with a specific hurdle, and I got past that this last weekend, but since I was working so hard on figuring out wtf my problem was in only that one area, I'm now behind on all the other parts. Oops. I console myself with the fact that it's not part of my major, I just wanted to know how to do it and now I do, so I'm good so long as I pass.

My modeling finals, while running into a few issues that are mostly hardware related are going fairly peachy. I'm not going to get them as polished as I'd like, but considering that I was spreading my time between four classes and work, I'm pretty damn happy with what I've come up with.

Wednesday... zomg. Wednesday and I'll be done for six weeks with mostly online classes in the upcoming semester. I might be working full time, but omg that I can handle. This semester has been one long steady crush of too much to freaking do. I'm mostly caught up on all my CSI TV at least (we shall not speak of SPN). J and I are one episode of Fringe behind, but we might be able to sit down for that tonight.

And now I have sipped at my tea and my fingers are warm and I should get back to rendering. Cue flaily arms.

Ok, I think it's time to owe up that I've branched out into a second fandom... I mean I've written a few non-HP fics over the past year, but usually as gifts for people who're into them, not because I had persistent plot bunnies of my own.

Now... this has changed :).

I've been enticed into the Alex Rider books by the ever-evil [personal profile] annephoenix two years ago, and devoured them all in no time. There's also a film that isn't too bad.

Being a creature of simple tastes, what attracts me is the fact that here is a writer who tortures his hero even worse than J K Rowling. What's not to like?!? Basically, it's James Bond for teenagers, with wild plots, mad, evil villains, non-stop breathless action, and a lovely bit of angst and conflicted loyalties. Not much brain-fodder, but great fun. If you're at all that way inclined, have a look at the books :).

I wrote my first story not even thinking about the possibility that there might be a fandom... Well, I was wrong, and have been enjoying AR fic ever since (especially since some of my favourite HP writers are participating!). I don't think discovering this new fandom diminishes my overwhelming love for HP, but it's giving me a nice fresh burst of creative energy. And plot bunnies like hell ;).

Anyway, the reason I'm chattering about this is...

[profile] spy_fest (here on LJ)!

Signups are still running until December 19, so if you're in any way so inclined, and have encountered the canon, give it a thought :).
