Dear silly Soap Opera,

I watch you because I want to be happy. Today's storyline does not make me happy at all! I have cried over it - probably because I am really sick but seriously - the cute gay couple split up by the religious family should not end up with the creepy religious family winning. Poor Simone. No more storylines like this for him. He's a recurring gay character which I am pleased about but please give him a boyfriend and let his friends have happy relationships instead of breaking them up all the time.

Also, can Lily and Heston have more screen time because they're adorable. Fuck, we just need more Lily stories. Dr. Vampire provides the very best stories - usually with murder.

Not at all happy,

Roz

I have a job interview at 10.30 tomorrow and another one on Tueday at 10. I'm very excited about both of these, as you would be. The first one is as an appointment booker and I'd be working from home earning £96 a week. The second is for a playgroup that won't be running until the school holidays and will be about £160 a week. Hopefully, I could do both and fit one around the other.

In other news, if you haven't seen it, hydepark_corner is accepting applications!
Since all the politics blogs I follow are depressing as hell today I thought it was high time I delved into a blog I'd saved but hadn't yet got around to read "Fat Girls like Fashion too". I'm not a fashion maven by any means. I know what I like (empire lines, I rock the pregnant look) and I know what I hate (leggings worn as trousers). Some things are too far out there for me and I wanted something that a) actually had things I could afford and b) wasn't American fashions because import tax is too high.

Yay for finding a blog about plus-size fashion in the UK high street then! I'm on the smaller size of plus - (14/16) - but it is hard even then to find things that work and haven't just been designed with thin girls in mind and then shaped up. It's also taken me far too long to begin dressing for my actual size rather than hanging onto an outdated vision of myself as a 10/12 - a size I only achieved after prolonged illness and which was hugely unhealthy. After having a massive clear out of my wardrobe which left me with very few pieces I'm now on the lookout for more fashionable, reasonably priced clothes.

I have also got my exercise bike out and done some work on it so I'm feeling really impressed with myself today so far. Later tonight there may even be a post about make-up with pictures as I'm feeling really girly.

Given the recent debacle over the HP RPG named Kristallnacht and how it was like over seventy years ago now I felt I’d tell you what the Nazi Regime means to me.

It meant that when I asked my grandma about her life in Germany that she started crying.

It meant that when she died and we went though her things we dealt with the horrible guilt of what her life had been there. She was in the German Maidens League. We have her pin with the Nazi swastika on it that she wore everywhere when she was a child.

For my mother it meant being spat at in school for being the child of a German immigrant after the war.

And for me it meant last night crying with my boyfriend about the murder of his family in a concentration camp.

So I don’t think you can really claim that the Nazi’s and the Holocaust don’t affect anyone anymore.

One company can’t keep up with the demand and is trying to pressure the BBC to pay for upgrades to their servers by blaming the BBC and forewarning it will bring down the internet.

The IPlayers gets between 3 and 5% of traffic in the UK. This sounds like a lot but compared to multinational companies such as Amazon and Ebay it’s a drop in the ocean. It also fails to take into account the limited net use in the UK as compared to other countries and the fact that although many people have the internet not everyone will be using BBC IPlayer.
It’s praying on most people’s fears and also on the belief that most people don’t know the first thing about computers or how the internet works and will become panicked and demand ‘something be done’!

Right. This is rather a change to my last Meta but still in the same theme.
I had an anonymous comment to my last Meta which replied “Well, if women didn’t act that way then they’d be taken seriously”

Oh, thank you anonymous. You’re right. It is the fault of women that we’re looked down on by SF and (sometimes) Fantasy*. If only we didn’t squee we’d be taken seriously.
So, girls, if you go to a Con or get together with your friends or do other fannish activities in the near future remember this check list to be taken seriously in your hobby and or relaxation activity:

1.	Don’t smile. Serious girls don’t smile.

2.	Wear all brown. Not black, although you are serious you could be mistaken for a Goth and they sometimes have fun.

3.	Discuss only the aspects of the show to which you can find an ancient or literary reference. For example “Daniel’s loss of memory in season seven reminded me of Jane Eyre wandering on the moors.”

4.	If you get to meet your favourite actor of said show do not become overwhelmed by being so close to him/her. Hold out your hand and shake theirs vigorously as if you were offering them a job. Then they’ll get the message you are not one of those silly fangirls.

5.	If you happen to see any of those silly, squeeing, happy fangirls enjoying themselves make sure you sneer at them and make derogatory comments. You’ll not only feel superior as a woman but perhaps you’ll also make them cry and, really, if they’re going to cry what are they doing there in the first place.
This is a place for serious women.

We all want to be taken seriously. I’m not debating that, but we want to be acknowledged as a fanbase that can enjoy all dynamics of a show not just someone who is vapid and only in it for the pretty. At the same time, we’re fandom. Of course there will be squee over the pretty. You can’t help it.
I live in the same city as John Barrowman and David Tennant. I see them sometimes in the supermarket or at train stations and I still squee when I meet them at signings or publicity events. (Doesn’t help that John Barrowman was opening a Dog’s Shelter. And he adopted a puppy! How can you not?)

You’re not either a good fangirl or a bad fangirl because you squee over Dean and Sam. Let’s leave that definition for plagiarists.

Wanting to be acknowledged as complex people means yes, sometimes, I do just fancy sitting down and watching Daniel Jackson look pretty while in danger and other times I want to watch him save the world with complex ancient runes only he can read because its thrilling and the sort of stuff that has you on the edge of your seat and because Daniel is my favourite.

Attacking other women in fandom and saying it’s their fault we aren’t taken seriously is a low blow. Other women aren’t the problem. The problem is and has always been the people making and producing and advertising these shows who refuse to look in any depth at their female audience.

And, just so we’re clear, have fanboys stopped squeeing now?

[Disclaimer: We all know of fannish squee where it has gone over the top. This is in no way defence of any of those people. This is in defence of low-key enjoyment in journals and home-life that I’m sure everyone has. This is not in defence of people who hand minips of actors having sex to the actors. That is just creepy whoever you are.]

* I say sometimes fantasy as the only fantasy I involve myself in on a large scale is Terry Pratchett and he writes fantastic female characters, is an all round nice guy and once let me wear his hat.
Pimping an RPG is hard but, Dear God, if I ever see another Harry Potter RPG game again I will scream.

There really is one out there for everyone – want everyone to be werewolves? You got it! Want to take away the powers in a freak chemical accident? It’s yours! Dystopian future with dead!Harry? Hell, here are seven!

I really want this RPG to work out. I think it could be fantastic, it’s just so hard to get going with everything else that’s out there.

This has been a little pet project for a time and I’m really pleased to say its now open for applications. I really hope some of you will join us. It’s hugely open ended as what you can do and who you can be and is original character based. Don’t be sacred by the historical time period – if you’ve ever glanced at The Scarlet Pimpernel or The Count of Monte Cristo then you have more than enough knowledge to play here and, really, as long as your character isn’t whipping out their mobile phone to call up their peeps its not a problem.

| Community Rules | Characters In Play | Applications | Posting Guidelines |

Toujours Libérer is a role-play game based within the French Revolution. It is slash-friendly, focused on the intrigue and passions of the time. Play as any European nationality or an American observer, as a poet, politician or aristocrat. Even a serving maid. Will your character escape France and resettle in England or will they help French aristos to escape? Will they betray their ex-employers or will they risk all to keep them safe?

Toujours Libérer will be opening April 19th. Before the community opens officially there will be a chance for characters to interact, alliances to be made and duels to be fought at
The Ambassador’s Ball

And for those of you not looking to RP: Old Episodes of Tintin on YouTube!
News of a Tintin movie sparked my interest (who will play Snowy the dog?!) and this is just a wonderful part of my childhood, Saturday mornings channel Four long episodes on Tintin – just perfect!
I’d forgotten or not realized how fast the actual action got going. In the episode I was watching Tintin was shot and then followed by spies all in the first three mins.
So go on, indulge yourselves!
http://www.youtube.com/user/Arefee

Whee it is meme time

1. Reply to this post, and I will pick five of your icons.
2. Make a post (including the meme info) and talk about the icons I chose.
3. Other people can then comment to you and make their own posts.
4. This will create a never-ending cycle of icon squee. Whoo!

prairiecrow tagged me and picked the flowing icons:

OMG! Shoes: I seem to remember gaking this one off someone at stupid_free when I used to hang out over there. It’s just…its Disney characters and silly type about shoes. What’s not to like?

No writing: I cannot remember where I got this one from but I think it sums up nicely how much I enjoy my procrastination.

Revolution: “You can’t have a revolution without dancing.” Well, that says it all doesn’t it. I have this one because on one hand I think it’s funny and on the other it reminds me of Good Omens for some reason which is as good a reason as any to have it.

Big Brother: Supernatural, naturally. This is an icon of a wonderful supernatural comic that I lost since moving to IJ but it was lovely and had baby!Sam and Dean! This is an icon made of one of the comics with Dean saving baby!Sam. I like my protective big brother Dean.

Scourgify by Flesh: This icon was made by the amazing fleshdress who made a whole set of absolutely amazing Harry Potter spell icons – just beautiful text and beautiful base pictures. I have millions of them because they’re gorgeous.
